What are National Fireguard Detections?
The National Fireguard Detections layer provides wildfire detection and monitoring for areas of heat (not fire perimeters). It relies on a program called Firefly to provide FireGuard analysts with a set of wildfire monitoring capabilities from multiple data sources.
The value is that it is persistent and can fill in the gap between twice-a-day satellite orbits and aircraft intel flights. It can detection new wildfires as well as areas of significant growth. It is especially useful during the first 24-48 hours when there is an information vacuum.
The program started in California, then Colorado and now is national.
To view National Fireguard Detections, open the layers menu and click on the layer to toggle it on.
Clicking on the feature on the map opens more information including proximity to structures, current weather, jurisdiction, and more.
